Future Crime Predictor - Minority Report-Style

The film Minority Report sparked a series of stories about attempts to predict future crimes before they happen. Most of the stories are more about data mining then cross referencing that data to predict high crime areas and times -- now scientists are going a lot farther.

New Scientist wrote a story about the U.S Government making progress on a high tech device called FAST a pre-crime detector - F.A.S.T stands for "Future Attribute Screening Technologies".

The F.A.S.T system is designed to spot "suspicious - devious" people who might be about ready to commit a crime of some type. The scientists behind F.A.S.T say that the early tests are overwhelmingly effective - "We have it at about 78% accuracy on mal-intent detection, and 80% on deception". I'm sure there will be many questions related to privacy issues on this equipment .

Transformer Like Fire Prevention Robot

I would just love to have one of these robots around the house for a lot of reasons. This is a Forest fire prevention robot by Jordan Guelde is an advanced robot designed to clear large areas of trees, Bush and other foliage from around a forest fire to stop the flames from spreading.

Back Burning thats traditional would certainly be less expensive and less lethal to surrounding wildlife but complete with and array of hubless motors, and integrated fuel system - My thoughts are that this robot is a a marvel of technology.

Government Attaching Laser Beams To Sharks - Remote Controlled

IMAGINE getting inside the mind of a shark: swimming silently through the ocean, sensing faint electrical fields, homing in on the trace of a scent, and navigating through the featureless depths for hour after hour.
We may soon be able to do just that via electrical probes in the shark's brain. Engineers funded by the US military have created a neural implant designed to enable a shark's brain signals to be manipulated remotely, controlling the animal's movements, and perhaps even decoding what it is feeling.
That team is among a number of groups around the world that have gained ethical approval to develop implants that can monitor and influence the behavior of animals, from sharks and tuna to rats and monkeys. These researchers hope such implants will improve our understanding of how the animals interact with their environment, as well as boosting research into tackling human paralysis.
More controversially, the Pentagon hopes to exploit sharks' natural ability to glide quietly through the water, sense delicate electrical gradients and follow chemical trails. By remotely guiding the sharks' movements, they hope to transform the animals into stealth spies, perhaps capable of following vessels without being spotted. The project, funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), based in Arlington, Virginia, was presented at the Ocean Sciences Meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii, last week.
Neural implants consist of a series of electrodes that are embedded into the animal's brain, which can then be used to stimulate various functional areas. Biologist Jelle Atema of Boston University and his students are using them to "steer" spiny dogfish in a tank via a phantom odour. As the dogfish swims about, the researchers beam a radio signal from a laptop to an antenna attached to the fish at one end and sticking up out of the water at the other. The electrodes then stimulate either the right or left of the olfactory centre, the area of the brain dedicated to smell. The fish flicks round to the corresponding side in response to the signal, as if it has caught a whiff of an interesting smell: the stronger the signal, the more sharply it turns.
The team is not the first to attempt to control animals in this way. John Chapin of the State University of New York Health Science Center in Brooklyn has used a similar tactic to guide rats through rubble piles (New Scientist, 25 September 2004, p 21). Chapin's implant stimulates a part of the brain that is wired to their whiskers, so the rats instinctively turn toward the tickled side to see what has brushed by. Chapin rewards that response by stimulating a pleasure centre in the rats' brains. Using this reward process, he has trained the rodents to pause for 10 seconds when they smell a target chemical such as RDX, a component of plastic explosives.
The New York Police Department is considering recruiting Chapin's rats to its disaster response team, where they could be used to detect bombs or even trapped people, and Chapin met them to discuss the possibility last month.
However, Chapin's "mind patch" only works in one direction: he can stimulate movement or reward an action, but he cannot directly measure what the rat smells, which is why he has to train them to reveal what they are sensing. DARPA's shark researchers, in contrast, want to use their implant to detect and decipher the different patterns of neural activity that indicate the animal has detected an ocean current, a scent or an electrical field. The implant sports a small pincushion of wires that sink into the brain to record activity from many neurons at once. The team plans to program a microprocessor to recognise which patterns of brain activity correlate with which scents.
Atema plans to use the implants to study how sharks track chemical trails. We know that sharks have an extremely acute sense of smell, but exactly how the animals deploy that sense in the wild has so far been a matter of conjecture. Neural implants could change all that. "You get much better information from a swimming shark than from an anaesthetised animal that is strapped down," says Atema. "It could open up a whole new window into how these animals interact with their world."
At the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology, Tim Tricas is using the implant to investigate what information scalloped hammerhead sharks glean from their electric field sensors. Gel-filled pores, scattered across a shark's head connect to nerve endings that make them sensitive to voltage gradients. Sharks can use these electroreceptors to spot the weak bioelectric fields around hidden prey, such as a flounder buried in sand.
For decades, marine biologists have suspected that sharks might also use these electroreceptors for navigation. Tiger and blue sharks can swim mile after mile in a straight line with no view of the ocean floor and only scattered, changing light coming from above. Some researchers suspect they maintain their heading by using the Earth's magnetic field.
When a conductor - in this case the shark - passes through a magnetic field, the interaction sets up a voltage across the conductor. The strength and orientation of that voltage depends on the conductor's angle to the magnetic field. If a shark could detect those changes, it could use its electrical receptors like a compass. The only way to test this, Tricas says, is to monitor electroreception in a freely swimming shark.
Other animal behaviour researchers are setting their subjects loose too. Jaideep Mavoori at the University of Washington in Seattle has developed a neural implant for monkeys that can monitor brain activity while the primates play. "We believe we are the first to record neural activity from a monkey doing a somersault," Mavoori says.
Mavoori's implant can also stimulate one part of the brain in response to activity in another, and has a microchip that can interpret the neural signals and send a message to another part of the brain or a muscle accordingly. He and his colleagues believe such an implant might ultimately help humans compensate for lost nerve function caused by injury or disease.
They have found that when a monkey is free to move around, sets of neurons controlling opposing muscle groups - those that extend and flex a joint - are both active throughout many movements. However, when a monkey is restrained in a chair and taught to extend its hand for a food reward, say, only the neurons that control the extensor muscles tend to be active.
"Remote controlled sharks glide silently though the water without being spotted"
Understanding this difference may be vital in creating a muscle-stimulating prosthesis to restore movement to a limb paralysed by nerve damage. For some loose movements, such as gently extending your arm in and out, sending signals to opposing muscles in turn works quite well. However, for movements that require some rigidity in the joint, such as inserting a book into a bookcase, you need to engage opposing muscles simultaneously. A successful neural prosthesis will need to mimic both patterns.
Meanwhile DARPA too plans to take its shark implants out of the laboratory. Project engineer Walter Gomes of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport, Rhode Island, says the team's next step will be to implant the device into blue sharks and release them into the ocean off the coast of Florida.
However, the radio signals used to direct the dogfish in the tank will not penetrate water, so the engineers plan to communicate with the sharks using sonar. According to Gomes, the navy already has acoustic signalling towers in the area that are suitable for relaying messages from a ship to a shark up to 300 kilometres away. The team has designed a sonar receiver shaped like a remora fish to minimise drag when attached to the animal.
The scientists will be particularly interested in the sharks' health during the tests. As wild predators, it is very easy to exhaust them, and this will place strict limits on how long the researchers can control their movements in any one session without harming them. Despite this limitation, though, remote controlled sharks do have advantages that robotic underwater surveillance vehicles just cannot match: they are silent, and they power themselves. Newbury Street Source

Miami Gets Its Own Spy In The Sky Drone

Miami police could soon be the first in the United States to use cutting-edge, spy-in-the-sky technology to beef up their fight against crime.

A small pilotless drone manufactured by Honeywell International, capable of hovering and "viewing" using electro-optic or infrared sensors, is expected to be flying soon in the skies.

If use of the drone wins Federal Aviation Administration approval after tests, the Miami-Dade Police Department will start flying the 14-pound (6.3 kg) drone over urban areas with an eye toward full-fledged employment in crime fighting.

"We intend to use this to benefit us in carrying out our mission," he added, saying the wingless Honeywell aircraft, which fits into a backpack and is capable of vertical takeoff and landing, seems ideally suited for use by SWAT teams in hostage situations or dealing with "barricaded persons."

Miami-Dade police are not alone, however.

Taking their lead from the U.S. military, which has used drones in Iraq and Afghanistan for years, law enforcement agencies across the country have voiced a growing interest in using drones for domestic crime-fighting missions.

I for one am fed up with all this surveillance on common citizens. There has to be some type of control here. Hillery states she wants to put 100,000 more cops on the job, Are we in a police state? There needs to be an checks and balances system in place as well as laws - if this system can be like the eyes of 3000 police in the area. If you decide to launch this gadget lay-off 3,000 human police officers for every one you put up. We all know this little machine will be used to abuse the privacy rights of citizens much like the patriot act has in the past.

Pentagon's Cyborg Insects Ready To Fly

For years, The Pentagon backed scientists and researchers have been trying to create cyborg insects that could serve as living, remote controlled snoopers. The problem is, those modified insects never lived long enough to be of any use. Now a professor Robert Michelson says he's managed to get the bug 'cyborgs to live into adulthood.

DARPA's Hi-MEMS program wishes to implant place micro-mechanical systems "MEMS" Once placed inside the creatures during the early stages of metamorphosis, as the bugs get older, tissues grow around and fuse together with the micro machines.

Flight International reports that, in his latest work, Michelson truncated a Manduca moth's thorax "to reduce its mass." Then he put in "a MEMS component, where abdominal segments would have been, during the larval stage."

Images taken by x-ray of insects with these changes and others found that tissue growth around the inserted probes was good. One DARPA goal is to show that during locomotion the heat and mechanical power generated by the thorax could be harnessed to power the MEMS.

Ultimately, DARPA wants these MEMS to remote-operately the insects, either through "direct electrical muscle excitation, electrical stimulation of neurons, projection of ultrasonic pulses simulating bats, or projection of pheromones. The ultimate goal would be to have the cyborgs carry one or more sensors, such as a microphone or a gas sensor and send back the information."

This technology is going to be incredible, Just think of the future possibilities or err ramifications

Plane Flies For 5 years No Refueling Needed

DARPA "Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency" have created an unmanned plane that can, in theory, stay up in the air for five years non-stop. The Vulture is an airplane that works like a satellite, but is not controlled by the pull of gravity better known as orbiting. DARPA has set the presidence for Vulture as five years on duty with a 1,000 pound payload, 5kW of electrical power and a pretty decent loiter speed to stay on course for 99% of the time against winds encountered at 90,000-60,000ft altitude.
"Vulture could be positioned over a battlefield, at 65,000ft versus 260 miles,” Say the directers of this new technology. Operating as a pseudo-satellite in the stratosphere and not low Earth orbit would provide a 65dB gain in communications capability, they say, and significantly increase on board sensor resolution.

It’s still left unsaid how the craft will fly at the prescribed 60,000 to 90,000-foot height for so long, but DARPA has told us it is not by radioactive fuel, I believe it might have to do with something like fuel cells, hydrogen or solar, or a combination of. NASA, the originator of the graphic above, could have something to do with the new technology that will accomplish this feat. I know I have seen a picture of this prototype about ten years ago related to NASA, however DARPA is not naming any type of partners in this project.

Spy Satellite Taken Down - Where will the debris fall?

Spy Satellite Taken Down - Where will the debris fall?

I really am not one for conspiracy theories at all. Then again one needs to think, There have been some strange events over the past week.

1. A strange meteor flies across the sky and hits someplace in Washington state. This was seen by many people plus an airline pilot who's name was never disclosed. This happened the day before the satellite take down. No follow up stories after that.

2. Our Marines take down a spy satellite we own on the night of a full lunar eclipse. ( would like a refund for this bad product by the way) During the fullest phase of the lunar eclipse.

3. We are talking Spy Satellite here think about it, this machine is probably protected to the hilt from capture, anti-tampering devices that can possibly harm a large population.

I agree here that the satellite should be taken down since there are many unknowns about it to protect people. However, how safe is the falling junk and what type of contamination is possible?

Is it entirely possible some of the other countries feel that they have a right to complain? They just might know a little more than we do when it come to these gadgets and gizmo's.

Where will the debris land who will have to breath it in and live with it?

Stupidest Police Sketch Ever - Have You Seen This Man

Stupidest Police Sketch Ever - Have You Seen This Man

In a world of stupidity and often bad information this is probably the most useless sketch used to catch a robber. The Royal Thai Police have released this sketch below of a bank robber and are asking anyone who may have seen him to contact them.

He has mirrored visor for a face, no features and his black head is very bulbous - wait a moment, is it possible he is wearing a helmet?

Mr Big Black Head is suspected of stealing 200,000 baht ($6,412 USD) from the Ladprao branch of the Government Savings Bank in Bangkok a few weeks ago.

Police rigorously gathered witness statements which were corroborated to paint a perfect picture of the bank robber.Below is what they ended up with. I believe he is here in the United States now. A man that looked just like this passed me riding a motorcycle on the highway today.

Pull Over Or Get Fried By Microwaves

Microwave Beams Stop Cars Dead.

The idea of an invisible energy beam that shoots from a police car, hits a vehicle of fleeing criminals and stops it is now a reality.

Eureka Aerospace managed to find a way to use microwave energy and direct it to a moving target, disrupt the electronic impulses of the cars electronic control unit (ECU) and in some cases even frying the circuits. Stopping a car dead, putting a end those long famous highway chases California is known for.

The electronics in the vehicle are not disrupted by heat, as with the typical home microwave for cooking. The magnified beam of 300 MHz, with so-called "vulnerable" frequencies that disrupt ignition and other functions. The beam is focused enough to pass any collateral damage to vehicles or any type of electronics, without harming people.

I can think of a lot of uses for this technology that would help stop a lot of crime.

New Law May Pass - Speak English Only

English only and that's it!

If Virginia has its way, House Bill 55 will make English the official Language and no state agency or local government will provide any information, Literature, Documents or any other written works in any other language other than English.

The House Bill 55 will make exceptions however for instruction, Police, health care, and of course court.

The bill has a lot of backing from anti-illegal immigration groups around the nation and stated that the new bill will help immigrants learn English faster and fit into the culture.

This is a very interesting topic to keep your eyes on. While I live down here in Sunny South Florida we have many people who speak no English at all, Some parts of Miami you are lucky if you find anyone who speaks English or willing to. Frankly, I find that rather upsetting sometimes when I am trying to get around. I remember after the Muriel boat lifts after many people became American Citizens the Muriels were trying to make a vote to get the street signs changed to English / Spanish. I have seen this is many other countries but never here in the United States.

I find this story very interesting , Does House Bill 55 violate the constitution in any way?

5 Stupidest Crimes of 2007

I just had a write a review of the 5 Stupidest crimes committed this year in 2007. Here are a list of Favorites that most of these internationally made the news.

First Prize: The British Urinal Thief Remember him? he was caught on camera taking the urinal from a British pub and sneaking it out in his backpack. After the story became international he then turned himself into the police stating he just wanted it as a souvenir.

Second prize: Randy Galluzi, 38, of Long Island
Who tried to steal gasoline by using a power drill to access a gas tank and ended up blowing up four cars.

Third Prize: India Police, Bihar They charged and arrested a toddler with of all things "leading a group of rioters and opening fire at security personal" His parents disputed this could not be true about the 3 year old Raj Kumar because he was visiting grandma at the time of the riot. Police were so certain that they had their toddler, Uniformed officers came to his home to take him into custody.

Fourth Prize: Brian Poulin, 35, of Hebron, CT, Who obvioulsy drunk diailed 911 several times telling the operator he was out of beer and the police needed to bring him more. The police did show up Brian was charged with disorderly conduct.

Fifth Prize: Forrest Bissonnette, 27, Englewood, Co. he decided to rob a bank by handing over a note to a bank clerk written on what else but his own personal check!

Thats really all I could think of for the Stupidest Crimes of the year, But if you come up with some highlights that I did not include feel free to post them!

Bush Forecasts Storm To Hit US Economy Amazing!

Our US President George W. Bush said on Monday the US economy was basically sound but warned of "storm clouds" in the form of the Credit Crunch that might be busting the housing bubble.

I always felt George W. Bush was different and really not on track of whats truly going on in America. He goes on to speak about the housing bubble, what a joke it is when 1,336 foreclosed homes go up on the market in California and only 17 get sold despite lenders offering deeply discounted prices.

Bush, then goes on to say "This economy is pretty good. There's definitely some storm clouds and concerns, but the underpinning is good, and we'll work our way through this period,"

Bush's comments came as a defense of his economic policy. He also commented that he was concerned about the downturn in the once exploding housing market. He stated That a lot of homes were being built and all of a sudden less people were buying.

I believe that Bush has lost touch with the American people and the economy a long time ago.
I understand working my way out of my own situations, However this situation has been inflicted on all of us. While Bush profits and grows wealthier everyday the average American is struggling to put food on the table.

The economy has done nothing but go on a downward spiral since Bush has been in office. We are at a point now where so much liquidity and business has been taken out of the US economy we may see financial disaster on sharp increase. Lets look at the facts US bank failures on the rise, The decline in home values the worst ever seen since the Great Depression, The Price of food outrageous and let us not forget the price of fuel.

While the mortgage relief package that has been brokered by the Bush administration is likely to help some of those home owners in the future, it just might have come to late.

We all really have been though a lot over the last seven years with Bush in office The war, Our pockets being drained, tax cuts that did nothing but increase our national soaring debt.

At the risk of seeming overly pessimistic,I really doubt we have seen the worst of the economic downturn yet, we should take Bush's comment about storm clouds seriously as a preempt to disaster, You bet!

As Bush says "
we'll work our way through this period" I feel we as Americans are going to have to work our way out of Bush it's going to be a very heavy line that all of us Americans are going to have to pull together and work on.

Japanese Minister "Army Must Deal With Godzilla"

The Japanese government Has stated that the armed forces must fight Godzilla If he reaps carnage.

The wild comment was made by the defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba after debating all week on the existence of flying saucers and if they pose a risk to the Japanese people.

The Japanese have also been debating what makes a UFO fly however they are having a hard time deciding if the UFO's are making a encroachment of their airspace. said Mr Ishiba

Mr Ishiba then proceeded to tell the news conference that: If Godzilla did show up, it would be a dispatch for disaster relief."

His comments came after the top government officials were asked if they had any conflict about the demand that the government confirm the existence of UFO's.

All I can say it must be fun to live in a country without war and talk about UFO's and Godzilla and finding proof of UFO's. Kinda reminds me of the time way back when, We used to talk about Bill and Monica.

Hostage Taken, Ransom Demand, Pizzas?

A prison guard in Australia was taken hostage for two days when Twenty inmates at the Risdon Prison in Hobart, Tasmania, AU Surrounded and captured a guard in protest over the conditions at the maximum security prison.

Initially the prisoners made 24 demands to the prison, However they finally freed their hostage after agreeing to fifteen pizzas, Coke-a-Cola and garlic bread instead.

It would seem that "At midnight, the final hurdle with the prisoners was all they wanted was to be able to order pizza from prison and have them delivered. The guard negotiated out with the delivery of fifteen pizzas, Graeme Barber,
Tasmania's director of prisons said.

What happened to the guard? Sorry to say no pizza for him, He is recovering from the whole ordeal at home

Grim Reaper Loses Own Head

Out to party with the boys never fearing death or thoughts of becoming a Grim Reaper as the night wore on. Unless, your Christopher Kelly on a night out with his friends in Morecambe, Lancashire UK. Christopher got totally plastered as he downed Vodka and Beer, Broke into a City Hall and then soils himself.

It seems that Christopher got separated from his group while celebrating a friends birthday. At some point he walked onto a beach and became stuck on something in the sand where he lost his shoes, pants and his jacket.

He then wobbled to the City Hall found a open window and rummaged though some of the offices until he found a cell phone, That He tried to use to call his friends. Right about that time he soiled himself forcing him to remove his underwear leaving him totally in the nude. You would think it couldn't get any worse than that, Think again, He rummaged though a few more offices until he found a grim reaper costume and put it on to clothe himself. He stumbles out of city hall and goes to the police station that was not manned at the time forcing him to wait three hours dressed as the grim reaper on the front stoop.

When the police arrived to enter their station they found the Grim Reaper "Christopher Kelly" waiting on the stoop. Where apparently he told official's his fateful story.

As the story was told in court one officer had to leave the room for uncontrollable laugher Christopher Kelly was given a six month probation term for burglary after admitting that he entered City Hall without permission.

War On Christmas Carolers Announced

There will be some silence during Christmas this year as orders have been given by the officials of Manila that all carolers are to be rounded up if found singing on the streets.

The Caroling ban was introduced to stop children from endangering themselves in the very busy streets. The practice has become very dangerous as children dart out into heavy traffic to collect money from drivers for their carols! The people that are found to be caroling and caught will be handed over to welfare workers.

President Bush the most incompetent president in history

Bush, Oh my god what a mistake we made voting for you for you are the most incompetent President in American history!! A quote from our own senate is below. While it might be too late to impeach this lunatic it might be a good idea to beg forgiveness from the world for his freakish acts of terrorisms on other lands.

You have no right President Bush with your false propaganda! We are not all sheep, People even the most stupid Americans are waking up to your lies and are finally seeing you for what you are! A terrorist of the worst kind!

Quote from Senator Joe Biden

"I refuse to believe that," he added. "If that's true, he has the most incompetent staff in modern American history, and he's one of the most incompetent presidents in modern American history."

Hurricane Wilma The Big Storm

I stood outside during the second half of hurricane Wilma under a deck sheltered from the gusts that were over 100 miles per hour. I watched as fences broke free and debris and tree limbs flew overhead and small wild animals looked to my spot for shelter with terror in their eyes to afraid of me to come in. I would have done them no harm.

Day after hurricane Wilma.. Relief efforts yeah, really? There was not enough ICE to go round we sat on many different lines four days in a row waiting for ice so our food would not rot just to be turned away when Ice ran out. Why was their not better communication? Why did someone in charge not call for more ice when the first truck was half empty? We wasted gas just sitting there waiting. We never did get ice from one of those trucks. Day 5
after hurricane Wilma we finely got ice at Albertsons who price gouged us. $21.50 for 12 small bags of ice. No power for over 13 days and finely got gas on day 11 after hurricane Wilma.

Gov. Bush,

There had be a better plan in the future for wide spread devastation. If the state cant handle helping people in a major hurricane such as
hurricane Wilma and give the assistance that we so dearly pay for with our much needed tax dollars. What are you going to do for us if we get two of these in a year? There needs to be better planning for AID to the citizens of the state in the future for hurricanes like Wilma and not just forcing gas stations to carry generators. You need to make sure that everyone gets the necessities needed to survive and not just a handful! I love the news showing relief efforts and saying how everyone was being helped.. What a crock you could not even get ice for all who needed it and just made a lot of people waste precious gas waiting in line just to be turned away!!!!!!!
